Topfavoriet Oppenheimer heeft zondagnacht maar liefst zeven Oscars in de wacht gesleept. De film van Christopher Nolan won onder meer in de categorieën beste film, beste regie en beste cinematografie (Hoyte van Hoytema).

Biopic Oppenheimer, over de ‘vader van de atoombom’ J. Robert Oppenheimer, was op voorhand de grote favoriet bij de uitreiking van de 96ste Academy Awards: de film was dertien keer genomineerd en won de afgelopen maanden zo’n beetje elke belangrijke prijs in Hollywood. Dat Oppenheimer zowel de Oscars voor beste film als beste regie (voor Christopher Nolan) zou winnen, stond eigenlijk al vast. En ook de winst van hoofdrolspeler Cillian Murphy kwam niet als een verrassing.

Cinematograaf Hoyte van Hoytema werd eveneens bekroond voor zijn werk in Oppenheimer en is daarmee de tiende Nederlandse Oscarwinnaar. Van Hoytema ontving al eerder een Oscarnominatie, in 2018 voor Nolans Dunkirk, maar won toen niet. In zijn dankwoord riep hij jonge filmmakers op om vaker op film te draaien, in plaats van digitaal: 'Aan alle aankomende filmmakers, probeer dat hippe nieuwe ding eens, celluloid. Het is veel makkelijker dan je denkt en alles ziet er zoveel mooier mee uit.'

Hoyte van Hoytema met zijn Oscar in de Press Room van de 96ste Academy Awards

De andere grote winnaar van de avond was Poor Things van Yorgos Lanthimos. Het wonderlijke sprookje sleepte elf Oscarnominaties in de wacht en verzilverde er vier. Zo ging de Oscar voor beste vrouwelijke hoofdrol naar Emma Stone, voor haar vertolking van Bella Baxter. Daarnaast won de film Oscars voor beste production design, beste makeup en haar, en voor beste kostuumontwerp. De kaskraker van de zomer, Barbie, ging slechts met een gouden beeldje naar huis, voor beste liedje (What Was I Made For van Billie Eilish en Finneas O'Connell).

De prijzen voor beste internationale film, beste lange animatie en beste documentaire gingen respectievelijk naar The Zone of Interest, The Boy and the Heron en 20 Days in Mariupol.
