The Social Network gaat over de oprichting van de netwerksite Facebook. Volgens critici is de film ook een goede kanshebber om bij de Oscars de belangrijkste prijs op te strijken.
 
The Kids Are All Right van Lisa Cholodenko kreeg twee awards, waaronder die voor beste komedie. Natalie Portman won de Golden Globe voor beste actrice voor haar rol in Black Swan. Tot beste acteur werd de Brit Colin Firth verkozen, voor zijn rol in The King's Speech.

Toy Story 3 sleepte de prijs voor beste animatiefilm in de wacht en de Deense film Hævnen (In a Better World) van Susanne Bier won in de categorie beste buitenlandse film.

De Golden Globes worden sinds 1944 jaarlijks uitgereikt door de Hollywood Foreign Press Association, de vereniging van buitenlandse filmjournalisten in Amerika.
