De lijst oogt vertrouwd, acht films stonden in 1997 ook in de top tien. The Godfather en Casablanca wisselen stuivertje op de plaatsen twee en drie, Singin ' in the Rain, Gone With the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, Schindler's List en The Wizard of Oz maken het tiental compleet.

1500 filmmakers, acteurs, scenaristen en critici konden kiezen uit een lijst met vierhonderd films, waarvan er 43 in de afgelopen tien jaar werden gemaakt. Slechts vier films van het afgelopen decennium overleefden de voorselectie.

The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) is de meest recente film in de lijst, het eerste deel van de Lord of the Rings trilogie komt nieuw binnen op plaats vijftig. Titanic (1997), Saving Private Ryan (1998) en The Sixth Sense (1999) completeren het viertal verse klassiekers.

Grootste stijger is The Searchers (1956) van John Ford , de western klimt van plaats 96 naar 12. Buster Keatons The General (1927) komt nieuw binnen op plaats 18. Volgens AFI-directeur Jean Picker Firstenberg is de verhoogde waardering van dergelijke 'vergeten meesterwerken' vooral te danken aan de opkomst van DVD.

Opvallende afwezige is The Birth of a Nation (1915 ), tien jaar geleden nog op plaats 44. Vanwege de 'onpopulaire ideologie' zou er nu geen plaats meer zijn voor de vermeend racistische film van D.W. Griffith.
